Lempicka married Tadeusz Lempitzky in 1916, when she was eighteen. She couldn't have been much younger on this photo. Several rare photographic portraits of the family survived their catastrophic exodus in 1918.

At the age of thirteen she was taken to Italy by her maternal grandmother, Clémentine Declair. The Renaissance masters made a powerful impression and convinced her to take up painting as a career.
